Leadership My Dad’s Way

My dad, General (retired) James L. Anderson spent 24 years as the Master of the Sword at West Point. He currently speaks on leadership at the Lincoln Leadership Institute in Gettysburg, PA. He has dedicated his life to developing leaders of character wherever he serves. Click here to learn more about him.
The two of us will be sharing a father-son perspective on the leadership lessons he taught me, the lessons we both learned at West Point, and the unique perspectives we each have based on his lifetime in leadership in the Army, and my 20 years in the business world.

What Are Your Leadership Top Five?

What are the top five things you admire most about your leadership hero?

In front of every audience I speak to I have an audience participation portion. With each group, whether it is a group of 15 or 1,500 I ask them to think about their favorite leader in history, in the movies or for whom they have worked. Then I ask them this question:

What are the top five things you admire most about your leadership hero?

Fear and the Micromanager

She's so controlling!

“Fifteen years and she is still looking over my shoulder checking up on me. I have done this job for fifteen years without an incidents, and she still doesn’t trust me!”

Micromanagers often have employees who feel like they are not trusted. The micromanager creates an environment that hamstrings creativity and growth, while exasperating her employees.

Some say this is a trust issue. That may be what it looks like from the outside. But, inside the micromanager the issue is often plain old-fashioned fear. Continue Reading…

Indifference - The Scariest Attitude of All

Indifference is scary

I get tired of people with bad attitudes very quickly. The griping, the moaning, the focus on every negative or potential negative wears me out and makes me want to run away.

There was a saying when I was in the Army that stated, “If the soldiers aren’t complaining, they aren’t happy.” But here is a scary thought - What if the complaining finally stopped?

Have things gotten better or have the people just become indifferent? If a team is indifferent, that is the scariest attitude of them all. Continue Reading…

The 3 Keys to Being Great at Anything

Practice, Practice
  • Carli Lloyd did it and became America’s hero during the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
  • Stephen Curry does it and was named the MVP of the 2015 NBA Finals.
  • Stephen King does it and is one of the most read authors in the world.
  • Chris Kyle did it and saved hundreds of American lives in combat.

These people are all professionals. These people are all recognized as the best at what they do. For leaders (for anybody) who want to become great, we can learn one thing from the examples above.

Hoping to be great is not enough.

Isolation Leads to Selfishness on Teams

Situation #1: On the way to the grocery store you drive by a friend parked on the shoulder with a flat tire.

Situation #2: On the way to the grocery store you drive by a stranger on the shoulder with a flat tire.

Who has the better odds of you stopping to help? Your friend. Why? Because you know them. It is easier to focus on yourself when you don’t have a relationship with someone who may be in need. Continue Reading…

Productive Conflict - What’s Your Angle?

To Be Sharp - Friction is Required

If a team does not engage in productive conflict, I guarantee you they are not coming up with the best solutions.

I sharpen a knife with friction. As I drag a knife across a wet stone, I must maintain the proper angle in order to sharpen the knife’s edge. If I do not keep the knife at the correct angle, I either make it duller, or I have no impact on the edge at all.

Productive conflict is friction correctly applied. Continue Reading…

Teamwork: What Good Looks Like

Values, values everywhere. Every company seems to have a list of values they claim to be important. Most of the time those values are a list of words on a website or a poster. Integrity, Service, and Teamwork are among some of the most common values companies claim.

But, we all know that just because a company or an individual claims a value, it does not mean they live by that value. The values a company demonstrates truly is the character of that organization.

What does integrity look like in practice? What does service look like in practice? What does teamwork look like in practice? Continue Reading…

One Thing that Separates Winners from Losers

What is that secret sauce that creates a winner? Why do some incredibly talented people fail to launch, while some more average people become huge successes?

Let’s face it, some people are winning in life and some people are losing. Winning or losing in life is not determined by inherent talent or an alignment of circumstances. What often separates the winners from the losers? Excuses. Continue Reading…
