Leadership: What’s In It For Me?

What's In It For Me?

Often when I find myself dissatisfied with being a leader I can trace it back to one question, “What’s in it for me?” This may be a natural question many of us ask as we evaluate options, but it is a recipe for dissatisfaction and a bad attitude for leaders.

Don’t get me wrong. I love leading. But the benefits of leading are often intangible versus the tangible answers we are looking for when we ask, “What’s in it for me?” (WIIFM) Continue Reading…

Leaders: Be Memorable

The Rule Of Seven

Too often as a leader, I think my job is to educate those I lead. Honestly, if I step back and look at most of my coaching and mentoring of others, I am not telling people anything they haven’t heard before.

“People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.” -Samuel Johnson

Small Goals Do Not Inspire People

Big Goals Inspire

Small goals are uninspiring. If a leader wants a motivated team, setting the bar low or downplaying the difficulty of a tougher task is a big mistake.

“People do not exert themselves for little, unimportant goals. They work hard, take great risks, and let nothing stop them only for big goals.” - MG William A Cohen Continue Reading…

Be Careful What You Measure

It's a win!

I believe every one of us needs to keep score of how we are doing. We need to know if we are achieving our stated goals.

But, be careful! What you measure becomes your master. I see leaders and entire organizations mastered by what they measure. Often this is not a good thing.

Many leaders and organizations measure the means of reaching admirable goals and lose site of the end — the goal itself. The result are teams characterized by bureaucracy, micro-management and mediocre results. Continue Reading…

Indifference - The Scariest Attitude of All

Indifference is scary

I get tired of people with bad attitudes very quickly. The griping, the moaning, the focus on every negative or potential negative wears me out and makes me want to run away.

There was a saying when I was in the Army that stated, “If the soldiers aren’t complaining, they aren’t happy.” But here is a scary thought - What if the complaining finally stopped?

Have things gotten better or have the people just become indifferent? If a team is indifferent, that is the scariest attitude of them all. Continue Reading…
